Explosion below Cheonan linked to North Korea

An air bubble caused by an explosion below the sunken frigate Cheonan has raised suspicions that a North Korean mine or torpedo may have been responsible.  The Korea Times reports.

Direct torpedo hit unlikely cause of Cheonan sinking

The South Korean naval frigate Cheonan was sunk by a close-range external explosion, not a direct hit by a torpedo, an international team of experts tentatively concluded.  The Korea Herald reports.

All adult foreigners to be fingerprinted on entry to South Korea

Starting in August 2010, all foreigners over 17 years of age will be fingerprinted and photo-scanned, the South Korean Justice Ministry announced.  The Korea Times reports.

North Korean army chief meets Cuban military delegation

Kim Yong Chun, minister of the People’s Armed Forces of the DPRK, Wednesday met and had a friendly talk with the delegation of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces led by Alvaro Lopez Miera, vice-minister of Revolutionary Armed Forces and chief of the General Staff of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces.

On hand were Pak Jae Gyong, vice-minister of the People’s Armed Forces, general officers and other officers of the Korean People’s Army and Ambassador Jose Manuel Galego Montano and Military Attache Leonardo Perez Mesa of the Cuban embassy here.

North Korea sank Cheonan with torpedo: Spy agency claims

A South Korean spy agency claims that a North Korean submarine used a 200-kilogram torpedo to sink the South Korean frigate Cheonan.  The Korean Herald reports.

U.S. Forces assist Korean navy in recovery operation

The U.S. Navy has sent four warships and helicopters to help the rescue and salvage mission for the Korean naval vessel Cheonan.    The Korea Times reports.

North Korean submarine near Cheonan at time of explosion

A 325-ton shark-class North Korean submarine was detected in waters near the naval corvette Cheonan when it sank following an unverified explosion on March 26, a ruling party lawmaker said yesterday.  The Korea Herald reports.

Four South Korean sailors found dead

The bodies of four missing Korean sailors were found by rescue workers on March 31, 2010, the Seoul Times said.  

A local TV station OBS reported that rescue workers recovered four bodies from the South Korean navy vessel Cheonan last Wednesday.

58 of the 104 sailors were rescued from the Cheonan, while  other sailors remain missing, the Seoul Times said.

The South Korean navy has called off the search for 45 sailors from the sunken ship Cheonan, after requests from family members. 

Family members made the request after two sailors were killed and seven more still remain missing, after their rescue craft was hit by a freighter.

The Korean navy crew were on a fishing boat when a Cambodian- registered freighter crashed into their vessel on Friday night. 

Fifty eight sailors were rescued from the Cheonan, while one crew member died, the Korea Herald said.

In other news, North Korean leader Kim Jong Il could be in China after Yonhap news reported a special train from North Korea went through the border town of Dandong into China at 3.50am on Saturday morning.

Reports however may be false as Kim Jong Il is expected to be in Pyongyang for the opening of parliament on April 9.
